Daniel Wiffen vlogged his trip as the Irish Olympic team arrived in Antalya, Turkey to begin their Olympic training camp.
Ireland is sending its largest-ever Olympic swimming team of 12 swimmers to Paris, consisting of 6 men and 6 women.
During a training camp session, Wiffen mentioned completing a set of 30 100s best average, achieving a personal best within the set. However, he declined to disclose the specific time.
Wiffen is coming off a significant amount of momentum following the 2024 World Championships back in February, where he won the 800 and 1500 meter Freestyle and became Ireland’s first-ever World Champion in swimming.
He also holds the World Record in the Short Course 800 meter Freestyle that he set in December.
Wiffen would become Ireland’s first man ever to win a gold medal in swimming at an Olympic Games.
Wiffen is also competing in the 10k Open Water race in Paris taking advantage of a new World Aquatics rule. Any swimmer who has achieved an Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) or FINA A cut in the 800 or 1500 meter Freestyle events and competes in those events at the Games is eligible to also compete in the 10k open water race, provided it does not exceed their country’s two-per-country limit.
