The state of Queensland within Australia is set to host a two-day ‘national prep meet’ this weekend, giving athletes a chance to tune-up ahead of June’s all-important World Championships Trials.
Domestic swimmers aren’t the only ones set to compete, as Olympic champion and world record holder Thomas Ceccon of Italy is entered in the competition.
As a refresher, 24-year-old Ceccon has been training at St. Peters Western in Australia since last year. The versatile ace was entered in the Brisbane Senior Metro Championships on the books for last weekend; however, the meet was cancelled due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Versatile Ceccon is expected to race the men’s 100m/200m free and 100m/200m backstroke events this weekend.
19-year-old Aussie Olympian Flynn Southam represents Ceccon’s primary contender in both the freestyle distances, although Southam is also taking on the off events of the 400m and 800m free. But Jamie Jack of St. Peters Western will also be in the mix, having clocked a new lifetime best of 48.27 in the 1free at last year’s Queensland Championships.
Additional foreign athletes include Finnish national record holder Laura Lahtinen and New Zealand speedster Michael Pickett.
